When I go to the gym for my weak (and I'm afraid failing) attempts at maintaining fitness, I often spend the first half of my routine listening to old radio shows on my MP3 player (and the other half listening to some kind of "classical" music). Among my first-half entertainment are old Lone Ranger radio programs - I grew up watching Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels on TV, but these radio versions are before my time.
I recognize most of the music that was used - a great many other standard orchestral pieces besides the Gallop from William Tell Overture - but I can't identify one that turns up often (see the attachment). I've notated it as best I could by ear - if the MP3 recording is correct, it's in the right key, though an octave too high as it's orchestrated, and I've guessed about meter and bar lines because there are too many beats to quite fit in a straight 4-quarter meter. The background is essentially triplets, a little like the accompaniment to Erlkoenig, so the actual melodic rhythm may be in eighth-note triplets rather than the dotted rhythms I've transcribed.
I feel as though it's a piece I should have learned ages ago and just missed somehow. Does anyone recognize it?

It may be Franz Liszt's "Les preludes" tone poem, part of which is in 12/8 or the equivalent.

Well, they use other sections of Les Preludes. I've played and listened to it enough times that I don't think I could have forgotten if this passage is from there. But if not Les Preludes, maybe another Liszt tone poem.

Checked that out - not the one. In an email off-BB you also recommended "The Mystery of the Masked Man's Music" as a possible source of information. I'm going to look for it. Thanks.

As an eleven year old I never missed a broadcast of the Lone Ranger on radio. It was the thrilling chase music of William Tell that got me hooked on classical music.
Later when the Republic serial came out I would sit through two showings of a double feature to see the serial chapter again. I wasn't alone, about 20 of us would stick it out and when we heard those horns
when Silver reared up, Heigh Ho, we would go banannas annoying everyone else in the place.
During the middle break of the radio broadcast they played a bit of Lizst's Les Preludes, I'm positive of that. Searching my memory I hear a bit of the Dona Diana overture; it might have been on a bit.
