 6 Minute piece for Clar/Orchestra?
Author: jparrette

Greetings all,

My son recently won a solo competition playing the Debussy Rhapsodie, and the the prize is 6 performances with the Hudson Valley (NY) Philharmonic. Their music director is insisting that the piece be cut to 6 minutes, which I think we all would agree is ridiculous.

I'm trying to think of a piece he could play instead, that wouldn't need to be cut. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

John

Viktor's Tale is less than 5 and is really cool and fun.

I personally feel the director should let your son do the Debussy. He is an idiot if he want's to try and cut it. It's only 8mins, 10 max. Where would the proposed cut be? There is nowhere in the Rhapsodie that can be cut.

Stick to your guns I say.

Peter, I absolutely agree with your second sentence. His performance of the Debussy at at the audition was 7:30, and a lot of it was on the slow side. A different piece is the only logical alternative I can think of.

Viktor's tale is an excellent idea. Thanks Katrina!

Try something different..
Gareth Farr- Waipoua (for clarinet and strings)
A very beautiful piece, not technically showy but very difficult in terms of tone production etc. Is always a winner on a program- very evocative. Recordings/music available on the web, is usually played a bit faster than the tempo marking on the score btw...

The Weber Concertino would work, he can make a small cut, I'd recommend the small Adagio section before the finale, and not do the repeats in the variations, many of which are often not done anyway or even the Theme is neccessary. Other then that I suggest doing one of the mov't from one of the Weber Concertos. Yes, the conductor is being stubborn. One or two minutes does not make a concert to long or short, the Debussy is a wonderful piece. By the way, congratulations to you son. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Messager- solo des concours - there is an orchestral version- exactly 6 min.
very good for the audiance.
Debussy is better
Francaix- Variations with strings- 7 min.
I wouldn't cut anything from Weber concertino!
Spohr - Variations on Danzi theme- 6 min.
Milhaud- Scaramouche
