 Concerti with small ensemble
Author: srattle

Hello,

Is there a place that I can see a list of clarinet concerti? Preferably with instrumentation?

To that question aswell, I have been asked to play a concerto, but it needs to be something with a small instrumentation, with none, or few winds. I've been quoted about 25 person orchestra.

Are there concerti for us that can have such a small ensemble? Is there anything good?

Thanks
Sacha

Well there's small and there's small, but here are some ideas. Maybe one of these will work for you:

Copland Concerto: Scored for string orchestra with piano and harp

Finzi Concerto: Scored for string orchestra

Nielsen Concerto: Scored for strings with 2 bassoons, 2 horns, and a snare drum

John Adams's "Gnarly Buttons": Scored for a 13-player chamber ensemble (it's really strange instrumentation--you need a banjo player, for instance--but it's definitely small :) )

Some of the older concerto's have small orchestra's, Stamitz, Rossler etc. The Stamitz #3 has 2 oboes and 2 horns, the Eb has 2 flutes and 2 horns. Of course the Mozart, 2 flutes, 2 bassoons and 2 horns. There are probably many others as well, I just don't know them. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Here is one that's really small.

Roy Harris concerto for Piano, Clarinet, and String Quartet.

Cos Cob Press inc. I think you have to rent the parts.

I have a Russian concerto for clarinet and piano trio, by B. Tishchenko. Bought it in St. Peterburg this summer for almost nothing. It features some very strange notation in places, though.

I did not know about the Harris work but it has the same instrumentation as the Copland Sextet, which is a great piece.

This might be nice to pair with on a concert.

Has anyone played this work (Harris) and if so, is it a good piece? Let me know the timing of it as well.

Thanks,
DRG

Re: Harris Concerto

Per Schirmer (the publisher - rental), the timing is 20 minutes. There is an old LP from the 70's on Grenadilla Records. AFAIK, that's the only recording. It's been too long since I listened for me to remember anything about it. He wrote it in Paris while studying with Nadia Boulanger, if that provides any clues to its nature.

Best regards,
jnk

Just thought of another idea - either of the two Gordon Jacob works - the concertino (which is arrangements of Tartini violin movements in case you don't know it) or the mini concerto (so called to distinguish it from the other piece which is all original). Either is quite approachable and they are both with just string orchestra.

And another one which comes to mind and is also with string orchestra is the Jim Parker concerto which I have mentioned previously on another thread.

Vanessa.
