Is there a place to look on a Buffet Crampon clarinet body or anywhere on it that will tell me what key it is ?
Thanks

I have a 1 year old R-13 A. It's marked on the barrel that it's an A clarinet.

Rather, just the BARREL is for an A clarinet. The clarinet body has no markings as to key.

You could also look on the bell, but that isn't the body either. Alternatively, you could of course play it and see what tone you get :)

Let me clarify. I bought my A clarinet new, so I am only talking about the original barrel that comes with the instrument when purchased new.

If you're talking about a used instrument, it's possible that somebody switched out the barrels. Of course, if the instrument is as old as my R-13 Bb (late 1980s), it will have no markings whatsoever to indicate the pitch, not even on the original barrel or bell.

The best way to find out is to play a C and listen for what note comes out. Another option, if it's a pro instrument and sufficiently old enough, is to key the serial number into the Buffet database on their website and see what it pulls up.

It is a 1951 #36784 Proffesional wood pre R13..Buffets site doesnt work right on it,, it tells me that it is a BC1503-2 and was from 2002,,,still havent figured out why that is.It is clearly older than 6 years and on the serial number list dates properly. As far as playing it to find out, well I dont even know how to put it together.I am a guitarist. I guess I will take it to a music store today and see if they can tell me.
Thanks

Am I missing something here? Won't measuring the assembled length, from top of barrel to bottom of bell determine if it were Bb or A?

The Bbs I have around me now vary between 59 and 59.5 cm
I don't have my A with me, but it is going to be longer

Thank You Chris,
Mine measures a shade under 23.5 without the mouthpiece on,,,I think that means its a B flat acorrding to a post of three instruments in the thread you recomended
The barrel measures 2 and 5 eigths

As you're a guitarist, have you got an electronic tuner (an automatic one) or anything with a stable and determined pitch such as a keyboard or other tuning device?

If you play written middle C on your clarinet (xxx|ooo) , it'll read as Bb on the tuner if it's a Bb clarinet and A if it's an A.
