 Legere?
Author: yearsofwisdom

Hey, my teacher has been raving about these and since of concerto's coming up soon, i don't want to blow out my cane reeds, and i am also playing in a pit. What would be the best legere reed out right now and what size would i use? I currently use v12's at strength 4 but they do need like 2-3 days of breaking in since sometimes, they won't even make a real sound since they are so hard. i also use a vandoren m30.

Have you looked at the reed strength comparison chart on Legere's website? That should help you a bit.

Based off of my Vandoren 30 that I use sometimes, I feel that a 4 is too hard a reed. I'm comfortable with a vandoren V12 3.5.

From the past, I have found that a legere 3.75 is right around what I like (I mostly use vandoren 3.5s).

if you're comfortable with a "softer" vandoren V12 4, I would think a legere 4 would be good (or maybe 4.25 if the 4 is a little soft). Remember, legere does offer a one time change of strength. So you can order a 3.75, 4, and 4.25 and whichever works best, exchange the other two for the correct strength. And then you'll know what to order again in a few months when those three reeds wear out.

My mouthpieces are designed to use Vandoren V12 3.5 reeds, and I get excellent results with Legere Quebec 3.5 reeds. As mentioned above, check the strength comparison charts on the Legere site to see what reeds would be good bets to try. Some players prefer the standard cut, but most people here tend to lean toward the Quebecs, me included, The Signature models are also excellent, but are substantially more expensive.

As to the SIZE of the reed, I would assume you would need a standard Bb soprano reed, as you didn't indicate you were playing alto, bass, contra or Eb soprano. For a Bb, A or C clarinet, the standard Bb size should work just fine.

Yeah i play Bb. now how much better is the signature than the other two models? does it justify the extra cost? and how long do these reeds last?

I love the "regular" Legeres myself, and use 3.25 on a Borbeck 11.

FYI they do take a period of adjustment similar to breaking in a cane reed, and you will probably want to try a variety of models and strengths prior to deciding whether they're for you.

The Legere break in period is about 2-3 hours of constant playing the first time you use one, and it takes, in my experience, about 2-3 days of playing for about an hour each time to really settle in.

Then they're good to go for about a month or two, depending on how many gigs I've got and what kind of music I'm playing.
