Um, I am playing the in the nyssma all state symphony orchestra next month, and im wondering why i was was selected for this. i got a 100, but how do they decide what clarinets get put in the orchestra, symphonic band, or wind ensemble? do they look at comments or something? ive always wondered this

Maybe because they liked your playing and thought you would fit well in an orchestra setting? Could be that simple. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I am a NYSSMA judge.

The specific placement into the NYSSMA performing groups is based on a number of factors:

1. score and comments
2. difficulty of solo (some grade 6 solos are more difficult than other grade 6 solos)
3. overall ranking (ex. #1- #10) at your local NYSSMA festival of those who played All State level clarinet solos
4. history - did you make All State in the previous year?
5. "politics" (sadly...always a factor)


Be aware that you can not be in the same NYSSMA performing group 2 years in a row. Thus if you made the band one year, the following year you will be placed in either the Wind Ensemble or Orchestra.
