I saw that very program on TV back in the day. Also liked Pete Fountain, Joanne Castle and Warren luening. Haven't heard Ghost Riders in the Sky in 40 years it seems.

I just heard that song the a week ago when I was watching The Blues Brothers 2000 on hulu.

I love their rendition.

It's also pretty funny when Dan Aykroyd turns around and says to the bassist
"Duck, give me a mountain tempo in A minor."

And I thought, exactly how fast is a "mountain tempo"?

Are you sure he didn't say, "Mountin' tempo?"

Thanks for posting this.

I went back and forth looking at the various Lawrence Welk Shows, and ended up watching them for a couple of hours!

On one of those was Bill Paige playing a Nursery Rhymes Medley, talk about your ultimate doubler!

He started out with bassoon, then went to flute. Next he went to English Horn, then on to a curved soprano saxophone. Next up he picked up the bass clarinet, then on to the piccolo! After that he played what looked like a bass or contrabass saxophone then finally on to clarinet!

I liked how he sounded on all of them!

Believe it or not, I remember when that Pete Fountain segment originally aired. I had several of his records and knew his Tiger Rag solo backwards and forwards. I was a little disappointed, watching him with Welk, that the low-register part of his solo was almost note for note the same as on the record. But Fountain was always the jewel in the crown, so to speak, that got me to sit through the rest of Mr. Welk's pap.

A pro musician friend of mine told me of a time he was playing with a local dance band and this guy came by looking for a job. It was Lawrence Welk. He didn't get the job. My motherinlaw loved his show.

Interesting, Bob. Was this post-TV or pre-TV? My mom grew up in North Dakota in the 20s and 30s and used to talk about a gang of them piling into the old Hupmobile (or whatever it was) and going to dance to Lawrence Welk's band, which was a territory band at the time. I always thought Welk got so fabulously wealthy from the TV show that he never had to work again, if he didn't want to.
