The NY Times Arts Beat blog has a very good article on Bernard Haitink rehearsing the Juilliard Orchestra.

I had the great honor of performing Shostakovitch's 10th and Beethoven Leonore No. 3 with Maestro Haitink in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago a few years ago. My experience was very similar to the students in this article. His face and the way he looked at you was so expressive and communicative. At times it felt like the orchestra was collectively holding it's breath. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. Nothing in my short lived musical life compares to the feeling you have coming in on a solo or exposed passage with a cue from eye contact by Mr. Haitink. His gaze is utterly penetrating, it felt like there was a realm of expression I never knew I could tap into that he demanded just with a look. I honestly don't remember looking at his baton much, one didn't need to.

Did you get to play that great clarinet solo in the 1st mvt. of the Shostakovich? I love that piece.
