 Trashed my BG lig
Author: D Dow

After a problem with the rails on my BG ligature in concert the other night I took my BG lig and stepped on it and then and cut it apart. It seems over time it has simply gone askew...in other words the rails became out of line and therfore did not allow the upper register to emit freely. Now I simply play on my Bonade inverted lig...which is very good. Wonder if others have had similar problems.

I had similar problems with my old revelation falling apart. first the red rope in the middle fell out, then the metal insert came loose from the leather on one side, i ended up pulling the metal insert out and eventually throwing the whole ligature away. It was good in its hey-day, I think I must've left it in the sun and the glue started melting or something. Now I play on the Vandoren Optimum which is much better cause theres no glue! And you can change the metal insert plates however you like :)

Yes, and have gone the same route as you.

Just for the record, did anyone notice a change in performance of the ligature after the rope fell out (which they always do!)?

I've used this ligature off and on, and have seen people use them for many years with no problem other than the rope falling out. Good to know if might let me down in a concert! Always good to have a backup it seems...

I have found that the ligature from

http://www.musiquedemarc.com/en/index.asp

works very well. It plays much like a Bonade, but has better response and evenness. The sound seems to be a bit more resonant as well.

I'm on my second BG ligature - the first was a revelation, the current one is a super revelation. I'm pretty happy with them but I did realize when I got the new one that, over time, I had managed to very much reduce the depth of the ridges on the metal insert purely by tightening the screw which obviously meant that it wasn't performing as well as it had to start with.

I don't think that we should necessarily say that these are bad ligatures because they eventually "die" on us - after all nothing lasts for ever!

Vanessa.

I am very suspect of the BG assembly under the rails...to have all that stuff going on under the rails... and then to expect the rails not to move is questionable. The metal assembly is quite fragile...well I think it it is a contraption bound to fall apart. Buying ligs that are pricey and more complicated does not mean at all they are better or more reliable.

As for Bonade's if you have an older one..mine is from 79 and works very fine I think I have a great lig! I also like the Rovner Dark and again it is much more simpler than the BG...I also use that too..but as for BG with the price and what happened to it I don't think I will return to the Revelation after such a lousy experience.
