Prof. Anton Weinberg has a book out on mouthpieces. I haven't read it but I have corresponded with him at length and he is a wealth of information. He also has a discretional attitude when it comes to offering opinions on this topic. He is open to alternatives and employs a good balance of theory and practice. The gray areas are many times approached by people as if they know and others don't. Anton says ..."I don't know 'and just does what works for him. I guess that's where the art enters.
I think refacers come up with their own techniques eventually. I personally have used rollers(needle springs and drills) to help in stablizing my hand motion to create a good curve. Will Grizzle suggested this to me and took the time to actually measure all his rollers for me. Next for me is using better rollers....gauge pins. I will never be a Mr Grabner or Fobes but I'm good enough so as I can perform on my own refaced mouthpieces and feel good about it.
