 New Section Leader?????
Author: xpedx7342

This doesn't have much to do with the instruments in general. But I am going to be section leader and leader of woodwind choir. (I was made first chair by our recent chair auditions). Oh I'm a sophomore in high school btw. Anyways, what can I do do be a good section leader? What are my responsibilities?

Also, what can I do for the woodwind choir in leading, conductinng, and searching for music?

#1, always be well prepared, lead by example.
#2, work on rhythm and intonation.
#3, be polite and NEVER make fun or tear someone up in front of others. If you have to be overly critical do it in private.
#4, encourage the other students to take private lessons when possible.
#5, if you're going to conduct study the score first.

Congratulations on making first chair as a sophomore! I think Ed Palanker's suggestions are excellent. Ask the director about responsibilities, too, because they vary from school to school. For instance, you may be the section's librarian, in charge of making sure the parts have all the corrections marked. (Please tell people to use pencil, not ink, for marking cuts, etc..)

Be sure to lead by example, including being on time (or early!) for all rehearsals and meetings.

In your new role as leader, encourage excellance--but realize that no one is perfect and mistakes will always occur. Be forgiving in your critieqe and those "under" you will also be forgiving when you make your mistakes. Lead by example, not by intimidation. BTW, congradulations and good clarineting.
