 Gonzalez Regular Cut

I've used Gonzalez RCs (3.0 and 3.25) for a number of years and always had great luck with them. 7-8 players per box and they lasted 2 to 4 weeks at 2 to 4 hours per day of playing. However, the last boxes I purchased are useless, very nasty reedy sound. I mean 9 out of 10 reeds per box are like this. I don't have a clue on how to adjust for the phenomenon. Could anyone provide some insight on the problem, have any long term users of RCs had problems with recent purchases?

Well, the weather is starting to change and that may affect the sound. Or if you changed your mouthpiece or ligature, that could also factor in.

Also, some batches of cane just happen to create poor quality reeds. This is to be expected as all plants grow differently.

I hope, you have better luck with your next reeds!

I don't know of anyone here in Iceland at least that does not have a bad reed day during the season chance from summer to autumn/winter.

This is 4 boxes of reeds, 2 boxes of 3s and 2 boxes of 3.25s purchased last summer from two different vendors. Nothing has changed with my setup, it's the same Backun Morales mouthpiece, the same BG Revelation ligature and the same horns I've been using for years. Old boxes of Gonzalez reeds work just fine, these 4 boxes don't play.

Are they from the same harvest/vintage?

Yes, all from 2000, the good reeds I'm almost out of are from 1999.

It may have been a bad harvest in Argentina that year. HAve you tired contacting them via e-mail?

No I haven't. I've contacted one of the vendors and he has not heard any negative feedback. I should likely contact Conn-Selmer first as they are the North American distributor. I posted here to find out if I'm the only person having this problem, if so I'll find a different harvest year and buy some more or, heaven forbid, switch brands. I hate switching brands, Gonzalez has been good to me for many years.

Have you tried the F.O.F. reeds by Gonzalez?
I've had good luck with the 3.25s and the 3.5s.

Bill,
I am also using Gonzalez RC 3.25. I had the same problem like you...and still have sometimes...I am using them for 2 years (since I switched to zinner mouthpiece). Just try ordering different harvest. Sometimes we get lucky, sometimes not...just the way it goes. I wouldn't suggest switching them if they work ok for you when you find good reed. I also have one of Backuns mouthpieces in my collection (I play on Ted Lanes now) and for me nothing works better on these mouthpieces then Gonzalez RC...
Also try using Vandoren Klassik ligature, you might be surprised.
Good Luck!

Nenad

I was beginning to think that I was lost alone in the diaspora of reedy RCs. I totally agree with you, I've tried a lot of different brands and absolutely nothing works as well on the Backun as Gonzalez RC.
