Hello all! I have an upcoming competitive audition with the Asian Youth Orchestra. Are there any tips out there that maybe helpful for me while I prepare for such a competitive event? Winners get a three week advanced study with world class musicians and a three week tour of Asia .. next year its the AYO 20th Anniversary so I'm sure this 2010 Audition will be a very competitive one ..
I'm selecting Weber's Concerto No. 1, III mvt, and the 2nd mvt. of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto for this audition.
Is this repetoire competitive enough?

There are a few things that I do before a performance to help me feel more comfortable.
1. Practice in the clothes and shoes that you plan to wear at the performance.
2. Practice playing through the entire program without stopping, even if you make a few mistakes.
3. Get lots of rest every day for a week before the performance.
4. On the day of the performance, finish eating about 90 minutes before the start time.
5. Don't drink any carbonated drinks like soda or sparkling water on the day or previous day of the performance.
6. Avoid eating and drinking foods that are very hot and might burn your mouth (tea, coffee, pizza, etc.).
7. Know the music enough so that you don't really need the score.
8. If you make a mistake at the audition, just keep going; don't make a sad or frustrated face. Eg. A clarinetist in a competition I saw once was playing the Mozart in the second round. It was a memorized piece and the clarinetist had a memory lapse and dropped a few notes. They stopped playing for a moment, took a breath to regroup thoughts and began again a few beats later. The piano continued the whole way through. This performer did this very professionally and didn't give the audience any feeling that it was the end of the world. They proceeded to the final round and got first prize.

I have something about that on my website on my auditions page. Even though it pertains to playing a symphony audition I think everything applies to playing a
competition as well. The main thing when playing a solo performance anywhere is being as prepared as possible so you have 100% confidence in yourself. ESP

My experience of competition is minimal, but Maria Callas had a saying that I think is wonderful:
"practice, practice, practice, and when it comes to performance start afresh".

When you're asked for a scale or a technical passage, play it a little slower than your best speed. Moderate and accurate beats fast and sloppy every time. If it's too slow, the committee will ask for it faster, in which case you'll already have practiced it.
There are lots of good threads on auditioning. See, for instance http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=166253&t=166138. The search function will find many more.

Play last in line and be the best. And remember that a certain amount of luck is envolved in that your style and tone quality will appeal to what the audition committee's ears think is "best". Just be absolutely prepared and go "in there" with authority and have fun playing.
