 Amplified Bass Clarinet Necks
Author: EEBaum

I'm looking at various ways to amplify bass clarinet in a very loud (e.g. loud enough for me to need earplugs) environment, and am exploring various contact pickup mic options. It's fairly easy to attach something to the bell, but for a better effect throughout the range, I'd also like to have something on the neck. I know there exist a variety of clarinet barrels with various electronic pickups built in, and am wondering if anyone knows of any equivalents for bass. I'd be plugging this into a variety of pedals and/or a laptop to process live.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I asked something pretty similar a few days ago you can, both about the barrel pickup for clarinet and something similar for bass clarinet. Look for the thread it had some replies.

There's the Poullath pickup and I emailed them to ask some things including whether it would work on a bass clarinet and how, but haven't heard back yet. I'm also waiting for a reply from someone to hear about someone using a K&K pickup I think mounted somehow on the ligature of their bass clarinet.

If you find something I'm interested to know too.

Here's how I fitted a pickup to my Vito bass -

It's now been plated and looks rather better!

I figured it might take a project like that. How well does it work?

It works fine. Of course the quality of the pickup is probably the limiting factor and the 'ear-piece' type are not the best, though still pretty effective.

The other possibility might be to fit one of the screw-in type pickup adapters (designed to be used with a soprano clarinet barrel) directly to the mouthpiece just above the tenon.

Hmm, maybe I'll look into that too. I do have a spare bass mouthpiece.

I'm looking to get my bass rigged up for some death metal, and maybe some experimental rock.
