Just in case you haven't noticed, Vandoren is now making 2 new reeds.
1. They now offer V12 reeds for Eb clarinet
2. The V12 Bb clarinet reeds now have the new strength 3.5+

I'll probably have to give them a try, but I'm still using Forestone 4's with good results. Everyone says I sound great, but I always wonder if cane really sounds *better*. I do think a great cane reed is easier to play, but not having to deal with the cane related problems has been wonderful. Nevertheless, these new V12s will get their chance....
As for bass clarinet, I use Legere 3's on my Grabner CX_BS mpc (Winslow lig) and will never use cane, ever again. Works for me and my bass.........

although I would like not to hijack...
I also use legere on bass, usually 3 or 3.25. I find it odd that on his site he recommends 3.5 or 4.
But maybe I will give the v12's a try. I do very little Bb work so I have actually not gone through reed trials on it lately.

So what if they do or do not? The real criteria for selection is still, DO THEY PLAY WELL. It's like the tree's obscuring one's objective view of the forest. Forget tip openings, baffles, bore size, tip profile, matching "this and that", etc, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum to the nth degree. If it sounds good, it is good (period) *.* (Duke Ellington

I've been using Gonzalez primarily for almost 2 years. It was to the point where 2 or 3 vandorens out of every 10 were playable or could be made playable.
The Gonzalez are remarkably consistent, and on the average 7-8 out of every 10 are really quite good.

From what I've used so far in the 3.5+'s they're just a bit harder than 3.5's and softer than 4's, exactly what they were going after. So, for what it was made for, they're excellent.

Well William, I've found there are characteristics in reeds which seem to work well with my mouthpiece/clarinet/playing style, one such characteristic being more material in the heart of the reed. Each to his own but please never negate one's questions because they're irrelevant to you.

At any rate, the 3.5+ reed isn't actually a "new" reed, it's just that they are sorting them more accurately. These are reeds that before would have been sprinkled throughout the boxes of 3.5s and 4s- the accurate grading just makes it easier to find the strength you are looking for.
