 Flute, oboe, clarinet
Author: Dan Oberlin 2017

Our quintet's bassoonist left for greener pastures a couple of months ago and there's no one in town who can replace him. Can anyone suggest some good trios for flute, oboe, and clarinet? (It's easy to find lists of such trios, but I'd like recommendations for ones you've enjoyed playing.)

Thanks,
D.O.

If you can find a really good pianist, the Saint-Saens "Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs" is a dynamite piece for your (truncated) ensemble!

Malcolm Arnold's Divertimento op. 37 is pretty nice.

Yes, Arnold is very nice. And if you have a pianist, there is a Milhaud
sonate for that ensemble.

The Beethoven Trio for Two Oboes and English Horn goes very well on flute, oboe and clarinet. You play the EH part on the A clarinet, reading bass clef.

Here are some trios that we have played and liked:

TRIO, Bill Douglas (a really fun romp thru Bebop Cantando & Dragon)
A SUITE OF SWEETS, Andrew Wilson
DIVERTISSEMENT, Jean Francaix (difficult)
DIVERTIMENTO, Marcel Poot (classic style)
SUITE BREVE EN TRIO, Eugene Bozza
SEVEN PIECES FOR WOODWIND TRIO, Jacqueline Fontyn
SUITE, Alec Wilder (jazzy, moderate difficulty)
TRIO, Gordon Jacob (you will like this set of four mvts)
FUGUE IN C MINOR, Bach, trans. David Atkins
TRIO, Harald Genzmer
CINQ PIECES EN TRIO, Jacques Ibert

PLEASE NOTICE--I was in error...these are all OBOE, clarinet, bassoon trios. Going now to clean my reading specs..........

William,

You've listed reed trios, the poster was looking for trios for flute, oboe and clarinet. (I see you've included Andrew's piece).

I was in a group of this combination and we had a far amount of repertoire which included arrangements etc.

You should try the Arnold Bax trio which was originally for flute, oboe and viola but Bax later sanctioned a clarinet part for the viola. Quite challenging if I remember but great music.

We also did the Beethoven Ken but the oboeist played the cor part on a cor and I played the 2nd oboe part which worked quite well. Same with the Beethoven variations for 2 obs and cor.

Yes, Peter, I should have read more carefully. We did play the Andrew Trio in a concert here last spring and it was well received. Thanks to your trio's efforts in helping secure a set of parts here on the other side of the "pond".

De Lorenzo wrong a nice trio (Trio Romantico Op. 78). Very involved for the Flute and Clarinet and very lyrical writing for the oboe. As the oboist, I was a little bored, only because the others got to play so many notes. lol. It's still a great piece, as is the Malcolm Arnold.
