 Buffet Bass Clarinet Size?
Author: nezziesgappy

I have a new Buffet Crampon Paris bass clarinet mouthpiece that I'm trying
to figure out the tip and facing size.

On one side are the very small letters EPE, while on the opposite side are also
small letters, JM. I can't find a comparison chart that lists any Buffet bass mouthpieces but it appears (by eye) to be the same dimensions as a Selmer C* and the Yamaha 5C, both listed as 1.80 mm tip openings.

Anyone offer any information/insight? I'm new to the 'bass beast' so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try going to the website of Ernst Schreiber, who makes the "EPE JM" mouthpieces used by Buffet (also sold separately by various retailers). The dimensions should be available there.

I don't know anything about a Buffet bass clarinet mouthpiece but I've never heard of anyone using one on bass or regular clarinet. It's always been my feeling that they just don't make a very good mouthpiece. ESP

When i was playing Phantom last year i turned up for a gig without my bass mouthpiece (i had taken home with me to use for another gig, with another bass) so had to use the Buffet mouthpiece for one performance. There was a point in the proceedings where i found myself thinking "oh, this is ok"... and then another where i was "oh, this thing stinks".
Was a big improvement in comfort AND result the following night, when i brought my McClune mouthpiece back to the pit.

Thank you for your opinions with regard to the qualities of a buffet mpc but
I'm asking for technical information re: tip and facing size.

The suggestion from David S. has been helpful although the web site is a bit
confusing but it is the direction I'm seeking.

You might also call Buffet in Jacksonville, FL. They can probably answer the question for you immediiately.

These mouthpiece charts are approximations only and have nothing to do with the mouthpiece that you actually hold in your hand. The only way to figure out the tip and facing length is to have someone measure it.

What is it that you are actually trying to figure out?

I measured a "Buffet" MPE bass clarinet mouthpiece this morning. The tip opening was 1.85, with a facing length of 52/50 (asymmetrical - longer on the left rail).

There are so many other factors involved in a making a good mouthpiece than just the tip opening and the length of the lay. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

That was kind of my point Ed. Tip opening and facing length tell you nothing about the response, projection, or general tone of a mouthpiece. It can only tell you a little about what strength of reed the average embouchure would find comfortable.

That's why I hate those "mouthpiece charts" that we see so often. Facts without information, so to speak.

A Buffet bass mouthpiece came with a new 1193 Buffet that I recently acquired. As it was made, the mouthpiece was not good enough. After narrowing the side rails a lot, narrowing the tip rail, touching up the facing to have the proper interface with the reed, and adjusting the tip, it is quite a good mouthpiece. Good luck!

Wes, that sounds like the guy who bought a car, and wasn't happy with the way it performed. He took it to a custom shop, replaced the suspension, tires , transmission and engine. The car runs much better for him now..
