Learn to balance the reed. A reed that is a bit too stiff and is balanced and sanded down until it's still a little bit too stiff will brake in much better and last much longer than a reed that works right out of the box. People might disagree with me here like Ed Palanker says he has much success by tapering a reed and clipping it if it's too soft but I've never had much better success than at the most a rehearsal good reed out of it but more often I get worse result than that.
