HEY GUYS! It's been.... a while.
I did a little search to see if I could find my answer, but nothing popped up.
Anyway, my question is, how many groups have moved away from tuning to 440mhz? I have been out of the ensemble scene for a couple of years, but I am hearing of more and more US groups starting to tune to 442?
I was just curious.

hi i had an article published in the instrumentalist magazine march 2008. for high schools bands and other amateur groups i came up with a system of "tuning to the part"- other words tuning to the tessatura of each part AND compromise tuning using 2 or more notes. for example tuning first cl. to g and a right above the staff. 2nd. cl. tune to 2nd space a and 3rd space c and 3rd. line d. i just look at the music we are playing and decide from what i see. my very good cl. quartet tunes the same way. 4th. cl. might tune to a below staff a and middle c and first cl. tunes to high a right above staff and high c. tuning to concert a and concert b-flat comes from the tuning fork long before the electronicn tuner which frees one to tune to any note. anyone else doing the same system? paul king

Our group tunes to 441 HERTZ. 440 MHz is in the radio spectrum, in the UHF band of Ham Radio, government radiolocation devices (radar) and other services.

I am told that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays at 442--until the brass come in (ala the "Great Gate of Kiev") and the general pitch rises. Another member of the CSO violin section (she plays a Strad) also asserted that the orchestra never tunes for rehearsals--"they just all play in tune".

Hi Contragirl, sorry about posing a related question on this thread.
I am the concertmaster in a high school concert band. The thing is, we are "an army of woodwinds" with 15 clarinets, 17 flutes, and at least 14 saxes, and exactly 10 brass players. We also have (because of scheduling problems) 2 violins and 2 cellos playing the oboe and bassoon parts. Our last concertmaster always tuned to concert F, then concert A (440). Is there a better way to tune, or should I just keep tuning our band this way?
