Hi all, I am new to this list and apologize if the question has been asked 1000 times.
I am looking for a suggestion on a short piece to play, here are some guidelines I want to mention:
* preferably 2-5 minutes
* classical era feeling (whatever that may mean to you)
* any composer
* somewhere between a cheery and elegant mood
* not too hard, I'm a happy amateur (but good at adapting)
* either Bb, C or bass clarinet
* I'm arranging a mellotron(!) accompaniment
* I want a discreet progressive rock feel (whatever that means to me)
I am open to any suggestion, my classical music knowledge is very limited...otherwise I'd use piano, not mellotron I guess. Thanks in advance to anyone giving this at least half a thought! Hope I can help you back in any forum I am more frequent in than here :-)

So do you want classical era or progressive rock? There isn't much that touches on both of those. Unless you plan to make a progressive rock arrangement of a classical piece, which could be cool.

Hi, sorry for not being clear:
I want to play a classical piece (close to) original, but to a somewhat progressive rock-inspired background which I will arrange myself.
Last time I did something like this was for a funeral when I played Renaissance's version of Albinoni's Adagio, playing Annie Haslam's vocal part on clarinet.
I just feel unsure which classical piece I should choose, I really have too little knowledge of short pieces...

Movement 4 of Ginastera's Variaciones Concertantes would make great progressive rock---but you really don't want to go there (too difficult to play, and you really need an organ and some guitars, not a mellotron--in fact, you might leave out the clarinet, too and play the solo on electric violin or electric guitar). 
You could speed up mvt. 2 of Brahms' Clarinet Sonata No. 1, add a funky beat, a clavinet (no, it's not misspelled--Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about), an electric piano, and some syncopation and come up with something good--although my mind is gravitating more toward jazz fusion or bona fide funk with that one--kind of a cross between Deodato's version of Also Sprach Zarathustra and Chick Corea's Elektric Band playing "Spain."
You know, though, the classical piece that--unaltered, even--really sounds a rock song to me, complete with drum fills, is the 4th mvt. of Beethoven's 7th symphony. There's a rock drum fill at every repeat sign--you just need a trap set!

Cool, I'll think more about the Brahms, it could be very good even with mellotron. Possibly adding an instrument...maybe a violin on top some parts. But sorry, no clavinets, Rhodes or drums...I try to stay away from the jazz for now :-D
Ginastera was a brilliant piece, but I agree with you...I should stay away. The 7th on a clarinet and mello? Tempting thought, but I have only a week to make the arrangement :-D
More tips are appreciated. I'll let you know which one I chose and upload a pdf if you want. I include here the Renaissance song (Cold is Being) if anyone is interested, it worked well with a big church organ. Please remove it if I break any rules for posting. I made the arrangement myself.

So, now my alternatives are:
* Petite piece (Debussy)
* Concertino Op 48, Andantino (Busoni)
* Clarinet Sonata 1, Andante (Brahms)
* Vocalise (Rachmaninoff)
* Peter and the Wolf IV-VII (Prokofiev) with some suitable narrative
Any a bit more up-tempo suggestions? Does not need to be originally written for clarinet.

Ok, I promised to put the arr here if it worked...and it did, so I do.
I ended up playing Sonata by Camille Saint-Saëns, second movement. The instrumentation was in the end Mellotron (2 1/2 octave) and cello, together called mellotron & basso continuo.
There were other issues which are seen in the score:
The clarinet part is the standard Bb part found on Petrucci's library, the mellotron part was played by a midi keyboard and *transposed* to an easier key. Hit +1 to get it right.
Now it's complicated: the cellist is a viola player, and he got his score written with viola key, and also he has a transposed version, which meant he tuned his cello *up a half tone*.
If anyone would like to try this arr, either write down the score again or send me a message, and I'll provide the .sib file. We played it far slower than normal, and it sounded great :-)
