I stopped at a little store just off I-95 in Newport Maine earlier this month. Besides self-serve gas pumps, they sold some groceries and fresh food as well as snacks and beverages.
As I was paying for my purchases, I looked at the display on the wall behind the cashier. There, along with tobacco products and such, were several boxes of Rico clarinet reeds.
Surprised to see such a specialized music item in a small convenience store, I asked the young cashier how they happened to carry them. She looked confused, and when I pointed to the boxes of reeds, she said, no, those were pipe cleaners. I didn't have a chance to respond when another woman who was cooking behind the adjacent takeout counter looked over, and she - thinking I wanted pipe cleaners - said, no, those were just clarinet reeds.
The woman then went back to her frying, and the cashier beamed at me. There was a line forming, so I thanked the cashier and left.
Back in the car, I exclaimed to my companion, a non-musician, about the little store having clarinet reeds. He wasn't impressed; he claimed most little stores have them. When I scoffed that in a gazillion places like that I'd never seen clarinet reeds, he made a little reference about my attention and insisted that many small convenience stores carry clarinet reeds.
Well, I guess I haven't been to all that many convenience stores in Maine.

Oh yeah, that's a funny thing about Maine. While you can get reeds at most convenience stores, they're not allowed to sell ligatures. You pick those up at liquor stores, but only after noon and never on Sundays. As for pipe cleaners, you got to cross the boarder into New Hampshire for those.

You all remember old Yukon Cornelius? "Going back to get some of life's necessities: Hamhocks, bullets, guitar strings, Rico reeds..."
Although, I suppose it does make good sense to put the standard Ricos behind the counter, so only knowledgeable adults would have access to them.  Don't want kids picking up a pack by accident. "Mommy, what's this stuff for?"

Reminds me of the 'good old days' of the 1960s-70s when just about every 5-and-dime store carried Volkswagen Beetle oil change gaskets and ignition parts in plastic bubble-packs.
If anyone ever finds a convenience store that carries BASS clarinet reeds, then THAT's where I want to live!

I still shake my head in wonder about the store - Golden Dawn - with the bows and arrows and boxes of ammunition on shelves above the frozen food, with a cooler full of beer across the aisle. Now they aren't even sophisticated enough to carry reeds.

My guess is that the local teenagers are all telling the convenience store owners that they're buying all those cigarette papers to blot their clarinets, so the convenience store decided to expand its line of "clarinet accessories."

So the cashier is being inattentive and gives you a random rectangular cellophane covered box.
Please check all purchases carefully, it could be embarrassing later!

*Grin* I looked the Internet over to find the OCB papers I used to use in high school...for blotting, of course! Turns out, a hole-in-the-wall, shady-looking tobacco store near my home carries them!
Since THE main music store in our town closed up its business, I WISH reeds were as easy to come by as a local convenience store. "Wanna Slurpee or lottery ticket to go with them there reeds, m'am?"
