Finding other players at my level
Author: chipper

I've been at this clarinet playing for about four years now and am looking for opportunity to play with others. I'm a 53 yo man and am having trouble finding other players of my ability in my demographic. I may approach the High School music teacher, my own children have graduated three and four years ago, so I'm still familure with the school, but what I'm really looking for is someone for duets or perhaps a small combo to get together once or twice a week.

How does someone not in school make these connections. I do pay my music teacher each week to play with me, but I'd like more than that.

chipper -

Ask your teacher about his/her other students at your level who are looking for playing opportunities. Then, as you suggest, go to the high school band director.

Take a look at this list and see if there is anything reasonably close by. You've been playing long enough that you would likely fit in:

I'd too suggest you join a community band.

Have you considered Craigslist? Posting a note on the bulletin board of local music stores? Perhaps say where you are located on this BB; maybe a reader would be interested.

Good ideas all. Thanks, I'll have a busy weekend.

A community band is a great idea and so is a community college. See if there is one in your area that has a music department, even if they don't have "majors" especially if they have a band or orchestra that meets in the evenings. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I agree with the community band. It sounds like EXACTLY the right thing for you

Chipper,

The problem you have is actually one of the greatest hurdles the adult amateur faces: finding others to play with.

Here is a link to an organization, the Amateur Chamber Music Players, where you can try to meet players of similar abilities. It costs $40 a year to join.

Good luck
