 La Mangue clarinet ?
Author: clarnibass

Hi

I tried searching and couldn't find anything. Does anyone know anything about a clarinet called "La Mangue"? That's what the logo looks like. It also has "PARIS" and "France" in the logo, and "MADE IN FRANCE" on the back.

Thanks

Could be 'La Margue' or 'La Marque' - I can only assume it could be a Malerne stencil without seeing it.

Selling a clarinet called "La Manque" in France would be sorta like selling a car called the Nova in Mexico...

It's in cursive and I forget R can look like that. The other letter looks more like G but I guess it can be a Q. So yes it's either Margue or Marque.

Is SML generally good? Only a few notes are just playable and sound decent but it's hard to say in this condition.

The bell seems to be a replacement and says "H. FREEMAN N.Y."

SML are ranked among the top oboe makers (though they no longer have the SML logo - just Marigaux now), and although they no longer make clarinets and saxes (or piccolos), they too rival the top makes at the time they were produced - though names like Buffet and Selmer usually attracted more buyers of clarinets and saxes (and their production volume wasn't as high as Buffet or Selmer).
