"Second Line" performed by "Sharkey Bonano & His of Dixieland"

Quick question for those old-time jazz fans. I dug through a box of old CDs and found a CD entitled "The World Of Dixieland Vol. 2" - It is a two CD set with no liner notes to speak of (only title, group, and sometimes the composer are given).

I've been very curious to find out who the clarinetist is on the 11th song, CD1,"Second Line" - does anyone know of a resource to use in order to look up this information? (The song is 3.05 in length if that is any help).

Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Not a quick answer though - I'm afraid.

I have but one Sharkey Bonano CD - ''Sharkey and His Kings of Dixieland''. The recording dates are 1957 and 1958. On the former date the clarinet is played by Boojie Centobie and on the latter date, by Harry Shields.

Bonano recorded a lot of stuff, I suspect, so you'll have a big search ahead of you.

Try posting a question on the Jazz Bulletin Board - I think they're mainly modernists - but it could be worthwhile. http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/index.php

Thank you so much for the direction. I didn't quite find what I was looking for yet, but your help has inched me closer and closer. One reason I am trying to find the player on this specific albumn, is due to the fact that the player sounds so remarkably close to a young Pete Fountain...well sorta. The sound is identical to Pete's early years for eight bars or so, and then sounds totally different for three or four bars, then straight back to sounding like Pete again for a few. It's driving me crazy! The style is all Pete, yet the technique doesn't quite fit in places.

However, you gentle nudging to other sources (using different search criteria) has led me to the following link:

Which provides a picture of the Assunto brothers, Pete Fountain, and Sharkey Bonano! So while I still can't prove/disprove that Pete is the one I hear playing on this album - at least I know that they did perform together at one time! That's a start!!

Well.....you've sort of got me intrigued with all of this now.................

PF did record with Sharkey.............I found this reference at http://www.jazzdisco.org/contemporary-records/discography-1955-1956/

And, there is a listing for ''Second Line''. Congratulations - it seems you picked Pete Fountain accurately.
