It is an excellent instrument at a very reasonable price. I have had mine for about 8 years with no major problems at all.

Here's a thread from last year (dredged up from the Bboard's search function):

Our band recently purchased those. Right now I play on an R13 Greenline and an R13 prestige. They recently purchased the YCL-650 as replacements because in the military, our instruments get "life-cycled" every few years and the Yamaha YCL-650 was easy to purchase through our system.

I like it. Much better than the R13. I think it does play differently with a SLIGHTLY different sound, but I prefer it and it seems much more even throughout the scale as far as tonality and resistance are given. I've tried about four of the five R13 prestiges we have, and I've tried three of the YCL-650s and it seemed to be consistent between those three.

The only other yamaha I ever tried was a CSG many years ago that I distinctly remember NOT liking at the time.

I have a couple students who have one, and it's a great instrument--they even have an A clarinet model.

Alexi

Kinda an off-shoot question.

You mentioned that they "life cycle" the clarinets. Do they sell them as surplus somewhere? and if so .. where ??

Thanks

i had one years ago. contrary to many comments above, i didn't like mine at all. it was way too resistant for me. it was just too hard to play compared to the R13's i've played.

but it could just the one i got.. i've only had one. you should try it out before you decide it to purchase it. i've heard so many good comments about it, so it is probably still worth to try one.

there is always much discussion about the mouthpiece having to fit your instrument. May i ask wat kind of mouthpiece works well with the YCL-650?

Also, beware the myth that Yamaha clarinets have achieved some kind of holy grail of uniformity.

I recently tried five new YCL-CSGIIIs side-by-side and one stood out from the others as being more free-blowing and even-toned. I was lucky to be able to get this verified 'blind' by a top-flight pro before purchasing the said instrument.

I've had a Yamaha 650 for around 3-4 years; it's a very nice instrument. I've never had any major problems with it, and it plays with a nice tone. I personally like my R13 Prestige A clarinet slightly better, but they're comparable enough that I use them side-by-side in the youth orchestra I play in.
As for mouthpieces, I'm not really sure about which specific ones are known to work best with the 650, but from experience, I've played it with both a Vandoren M13 Lyre and a Clark Fobes CWF (both were in combination with a Clark Fobes cocobolo barrel) and I like it much more with the CWF. It's less stuffy, more free blowing, and easier to articulate. I think that may just be a matter of personal preference, though, not necessarily a result of it working better for the 650 in particular.

I had the 650 2 years ago when I stopped playing the clarinet but decided to return . but this time I went for the R13 , it is difficult to compare like this , of course, all I know is that the moment I tried this R13 I fell in love with it , what a beautiful round warm sound , very uniform scale, and very argonomic keywork. I use the m30 , also used this MP on the 650. . the Yamaha is a very nice and well built instrument. But I do remembering test palying on both -2 years ago - when I realised the nicer warmer sound of the R13 , but as the yamaha was much cheaper I bought it then . I think that if you can afford the R13 , see if you can compare both ,
