 Contra Alto Duets
Author: lrooff
Date:   2009-09-18 06:11

I realize it's somewhat of an odd request, but can anyone suggest a duet for contra alto clarinets? I've finally gotten mine up and running, and the other contra alto player in our band suggested that we find a duet to play the next time we do a performance that includes our clarinet choir. We figured it would be fun to do, as the average audience member has never even heard a single contra alto playing, to say nothing of two of them. (And how often does a director get to refer to "the contra alto clarinet section"?)

Please let us hear the result. And if you could share the sheet music, I'd greatly appreciate it, as I would like to play some contrabass duets as well...

What's worse than one contra? Just kidding. You can play any clarinet duet that is at your level of playing, it doesn't have to be "contra" duets. ESP

PS. Sorry, my site doesn't have any contra stuff but it does have lots of bass clarinet stuff.

Look for bassoon duets. There are some very cool pieces, many available on line for free.

Poulenc, Two-Clarinet Sonata. One of you will have to transpose the A-clarinet part.

Best regards,

Ed, I agree, off course you can play any duet. But some pieces sound better when played in low registers than others. The best pieces I've played on contra are the pieces my brother gets for tuba, originally written for tuba, by a tuba player. And some bass clarinet and string bass pieces. No coincidence, I'd say.
