 Curiosity - Berlioz
Author: grenadilla428

Hello, all,

This is a quick question: in the Symphonie Fantastique, the first clarinet part also contains the Eb part. I've not yet had the opportunity to perform this piece - does the principal indeed play the Eb part? I always thought it was given to the designated Eb player.

Thanks,
have a great weekend!

Interesting question and answers, TKS. A FINE concert, especially the Symp-Fan, I watched ?Stacy? closely playing the Eng Horn solos SUPERBLY, wishing I could even attempt it . The ?1st cl'ist? had an unusual ligature "reversal" ?cut-outs? sim. to a Lurie lig? . Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I a big symphony orchestra the principal Eb would usually play it playing the second part for the other movements and then swopping parts for the last.

I'd rather play all the instruments if I was playing the first part. Makes life easier and indeed the player did at the first performance.

Good question, I play in the Baltimore Symphony. The principal player, we've had three it the 46 years I've played here, has never played Eb in anything. For many years the principal player would play the 2nd part, in C clarinet, and the assistant 1st and Eb player would play the Eb part. Sometimes the assistant 1st would also play the entire second part giving off the 2nd player and playing the Eb part in the last mov't. In recent years the 2nd player would play his own part and the Eb player would play that movement on Eb clarinet and the Principal would sit and listen.
So it depends on the orchestra, who plays Eb and if there are 3 or 4 players in the section. Usually in the USA at least, the assistant, or associate principal is the Eb player. If there are only 3 players in the section it's usually the 2nd player that plays Eb but I guess it could be the third and bass clarinet player too but that would be very unusual.
I can say for sure that the above is how it's down in every American Orchestra that has at least 3 players in their section. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Last night in the NYP opening night concert, broadcast on television, they used only 2 players. Mark Nuccio played the 1st clarinet part for the first 4 movements and then Pascual Martinez Forteza played the 1st part (with the famous Eb solo) in the last movement.

The camera-work in the NYPO concert was fine for the first oboe and flute, but dreadful for clarinetists (and not so hot overall). Nearly every clarinet solo shot was blocked by another player's head.

Mark Nuccio was definitely playing a Kaspar ligature. The new one I just got is shaped to fit reed when inverted, yet the screws are non-inverted style, and the shape of the bands is identical.

Pascual played the Eb solo in the finale, and I saw a very brief shot of Mark in the same movement playing, I think, a C clarinet.

Mark was interesting to watch, when he was visible. His embouchure looks exactly like Stanley's. He sounded beautiful, though without the clarion, hear-it-over-around-and-through-everybody quality that Stanley had. It will be interesting to listen to his development through the season.

David -

Presumably a Rico Reserve Classic, which he helped design. I got a couple of boxes, and they're amazing.

The announcer stated that the composer-in-residence's clarinet concerto will be performed later in the year.¿Does anyone know who the soloist will be?

We also switch parts in the last movement. I was watching Berlin Phil recently and they didn’t switch until after the C clarinet solo, so Walter Seyfarth first got to play the C-clar solo and then quick as a flash changed to Eb for that solo. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable with that solution.

So, what about orchestral auditions? I would think that the Eb part would only be asked in an Eb audition, but since it's contained in the first part, do you think an audition committee would ever ask for it? Hmm...

The Eb part would only be asked in an Eb audition unless the position states "utility" as well. Sometimes orchestra's in the US now use that term because they would like to have the 2nd player be capable of playing one or two of the utility instruments but not necessarily so. It depends on the orchestra. We did that in Baltimore years ago but it was not a deal breaker. As it turned out the player that won the audition also played bass clarinet. It would not be a requirement for a principal position though. ESP

That C clarinet part in the Witch's Sabbath is on the RCM clarinet exam as a transposition piece - played up to speed but transposed on Bb. Possible, but brutal!
