Since many young clarinetist ask about careers in music, I thought“Careers in Jazz” http://www.allaboutjazz.com/m/article.php?id=33754 might be a good departure point for discussion and reflection.

A few days ago, I read this Georges Bizet quote about music: What a beautiful art, but what a wretched profession.

Over the weekend, I read "The Soloist" (I haven't seen the movie yet). Quite a story! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put the book down.

As I've written before, I don't think it's right to discourage a talented person who wants a career in music. At the same time, it's important to be honest about career prospects. I think every music major today should have a backup plan.
