I was talking to a fellow reed player, and they mentioned how "Back in the day" clarinet players used to pack clay onto their barrels and bells, because the theory was that "the thinker they are, the warmer the sound"
Just curious if anyone has heard of this, or what they think about this idea!

I guess that goes along with Buffet selling us on the 'denser' wood from the center of a blackwood tree for the Buffet R13 prestige and RC prestige. The denser, the better, right?
But then they go ahead and make the very thin-walled clarinet that was top of the line (festival I think at the time?) cause it's better........and what about the wall of the Tosca? Where does that fall for a 7000 dollar clarinet?
I don't know. I guess I just don't think that a difference in thickness for one of the hardest woods out there already would make that much difference. I figure if it's an instrument where the vibration of the wood or reverberation off of it is DEFINITELY a contribution to the sound (guitar, violin, etc.) it would make a difference.

There is a small creek in New Jersey from which Major League Baseball obtains the secret mud with which they rub baseballs prior to each game. (For real, look it up).
I have access to this miracle mud and use it daily on my barrels and bells, and the difference is remarkable.
Seriously....No, never heard of that one.

And do any makers nowadays actually use heartwood for making instruments? I doubt it.

I can imagine that this could have happened. A cheap way to "Backun-ize" your clarinet. You have to ask yourself, how much mellower do you really want your clarinet to be?

Geez, I came up with the idea of Baseball mud (see above), and look who you pick to implement it......A Dangerfield line comes to mind.
Disclaimer...I will NOT use mud or clay on the custom barrels that I make.

(Disclaimer - I sell clarinet barrels)
The type of wood and often the mass do, IMHO, make a difference in the sound of the instrument as modified by the barrel (bells I am still pondering). Adding other materials - e.g. clay that has a different resonance property is a little problematic for a thumbs up. The most important variable is of course the bore taper for barrels - which also is different for different materials and total mass.

P.S. Allan may not use magic mud on his barrels but has been observed reciting cryptic incantations over wood and finished barrels at the beginning of the full moon.

Omar, there are no cryptic incantations....those are scatologic perjuratives in conjunction with laser-equiped shaman rattles.
I think Greg Smith refers to this as the "spirit of the reamer"
