1. 1 line up, 3 lines down; no markings on table side, back marked:
"STEEL EBONITE"
H. BETTONEY
BOSTON
2. 1 line up, 1 line down; marked 6 on the bottom right, beside the table, back marked "STEEL EBONITE" and with the oval H BETTONEY C B Co BOSTON logo.
They came with Silva-Bets, and had old Bettoney reeds on them. One of the reeds was itself marked Silva-Bet!

I have a similaar mp, try yours, it may play well, as mine does. I believe that either the The Woodwind Co or Conn had the "Steel E " copyrighted and had many mps standard on new cls. As Allen said "good stuff", you may wish to have yours refaced to your liking. The Silva -Bet was [perhaps] the best metal cl made. Don

I'm not looking to unload, just trying to choose a few Bettoney pieces to get refaced. These two are new to me. The others I have are
3. 1 line up, 3 lines down; marked 5 FRANCE on the bottom right beside the table, with the oval logo on the back.
4. 1 line up, 2 lines down; marked at the bottom FRANCE to the left of the table and 5 to the right, with SUPERIOR QUALITY parallel to the right edge of the table, on the back:
H. BETTONEY
BOSTON
COLUMBIA
MODEL
(Columbia Model is reputed to have been a mid-grade instrument, but this came with a solid silver ligature and cap, and the clarinet has a twist-tuning barrel and plays nicely.)
5. 1 line up, 3 lines down; marked 6 FRANCE at the bottom right beside the able, with ARTISTIC FACING parallel to the right edge of the table, back marked "STEEL EBONITE" with the oval logo.
Any idea which will be the best?

Despite the Columbia model being mid grade, the designated mouthpieces were fine, as were those with the Silvabet.
I even got an excellent "qualite superioure" one with a Cadet model.
Unfortunately, they also made a plastic mouthpiece. These were decent for plastic items, but are not in the league with the hard rubber ones.
Most coveted are the ones with artistic facing enscribed. Nonetheless any Bettoney with either Steel Ebonite or Qual. Sup. on it is worth getting faced and voiced. I've had many done by a variety of facing artists and all came out with a nice ring to the sound.
Frankly, I would face both.

I would suggest just playing them to find out which one is there. I have purchased ched mouthpieces that were in need of refacing and other work. If you can ignore how they feel a lot of the time you can hear what the potential is in them. I purchased an evette schaefer from a guy and he probably was laughing when I purchased it from him. I was squeaking and had a hard time playing it but I could hear that there was great ring and a core sound. It just needed to be refaced and I think some baffle work was done. It is now my back up mouthpiece and $50 plus a refacing is all I paid and it plays great.
