Of course, but only if it is made of ocote and installed with the flat grain aligned with the jump trill keys.

I would say that some barrels allow faster articulation than others, regardless of age.

Walter, yes, a Ruger barrel will indeed make one tongue faster. This was pointed out in a now famous article in Clarinet Digest by "Sig" Sauer, the famous jazz virtuoso.
Changes in resistance could conceivably have some effect. The reed would have the most effect, however, next would be the mouthpiece, and lastly the barrel.

Serially,
I just added a Vessels barrel to my quiver because it aided pitch changes. It made the clarinet more responsive.
In my case, though, my tongue is so slow that even a bad barrel/horn is quicker than I am.

I'm sure that if you advertised a barrel that would improve tonguing speed, and had a bunch of high profile players endorse it, many would hop on the bandwagon and swear that the barrel does make them tongue faster, even if it didn't. The placebo effect. But I must say I am a fan of the placebo effect. A few years back I switched to a Vandoren Klassic ligature. I immediately felt it made my sound a bit darker, and loved the way it responded. Well, in live listening tests with students as well as recordings, the difference in tone was non-existent. However, the fact that I felt like I sounded better to myself was significant, and I still am enjoying the benefits of the improved sound, even if its only in my own head!

Anything that improves your response, mouthpiece, clarinet, reed, or ligature will somehow improve your articulation as well as all aspects of playing the clarinet. So Roll out the Barrel.
PS. Don't expect to go from 104 to 120 to the quarter note anytime soon. For that you need a new tongue. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Well, that's exactly right. As I've said before, some beers are darker than others.
For articulation, lights are recommended.
But be careful about picking something just because it carries the name of some famous clarinetist--contrary to popular belief, drinking Bud Light won't magically make you sound like you're ready for the Boston Symphony.

Great responses! I like - depends on what the barrel is full of!
Anyway, I was trying a bunch of new barrels yesterday, many of which I liked.
One in particular, really seem to let me ZOOM. Response was a little quicker and thus my tonguing speed seemed to pick up a bit.
I'm going to test again today and see if I get the same impression.

Well if you combine two well known objects and squish them together, it might exceed the speed of a good triple tongue, and put it into the realm of the "bilabial fricative" as George Carlin called it.
