I am 2 1/2 weeks post-op from thyroidectomy and salivary gland excision. I am wondering how long to wait before I resume playing my clarinet.

So sorry for you to have to undergo invasion by knife, even a sterile one; hope it solved your problem. As to your question, be strictly guided by your doctor. You don't want to allow vascular pressure (from blowing or straining) to rupture blood vessels and cause hemorrage. While your doctor may not be a wind player, he or she likely knows the effects of lifting and straining. And, too, any medicine you may be taking may affect things you may not be aware of, like breathing, blood pressure, muscle tone. After you follow your doctor's advice, let your body tell you how ready it is to cooperate with your insane drive to blow wind through a piece of wood, rubber or plasic. Best wishes.

Thanks for your best wishes and your suggestion to exercise constraint. A voice of reason is always welcome.

My dentist thinks I lost a dental implant because I returned to the clarinet too soon after the operation. Having had the procedure repeated, I have been forbidden to blow for two months.
Anyway, my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Two months is a long time to lay off practicing. However, the loss of a dental implant is not worth risking it.
Thanks for the good wishes. Recovery is progressing well, but, given the good advice from you all, I have decided to use good sense and practice restraint (instead of the clarinet) for a while longer.
