I've taken possession of an E-11 that's at least ten years old. It seems to be in very good shape, but the keys are tarnished deep blue and I'd like to clean them up I've never had to remove such deep tarnish before -- I kept my old faithful horn shining for years with an occasional wiping. Is there any way to tell whether they're nickel or silver plated? Does it matter as far as polishing them? What should I use? thanks for any help!!

Nickel has a darker color than silver and it "tarnishes" by becoming cloudy. Silver is lighter in color when shiny, but changes color when it tarnishes.

If I recall, E-11's used to come in the 80's with nickel keys, then silver plated for a number of years. The silver plated era started with the crappy black case that had the gravity balanced hinge lock and single clasp (around 1992 ish).
Then they started making them with nickel or silver. Not sure if it's just silver now or they are coming with silver as an option.
I was surprised when I saw an E-11 from 4-5 years ago that had nickel keys.

its almost certainly silver - use a polish cloth designed to remove silver tarnish (silver oxide) - you can get one at any music store, or the major mail order (internet) dealers)

Based on your description they're silver plated. Try a silverware cleaning cloth first.

The model they make now is the newer E11 France and it is silver plated.
