The bass clarinet goes out of adjustment with the slightest bump, and the long rods are easy to bend. I'd stay away from a soft bag.
If it makes you feel any better, contras are even worse.

I agree, Ken. When I bought my Buffet 1193-2 from Lisa A, she warned me that it would go out of adjustment easily and require almost constant mainatainance. However, in spite of weekly use (rehearsals, etc), for the past 5 yrs, I think it has been in for minor adjustments only three or four times. I am careful in handling, swabbing, etc and use the Buffet stock case, but maybe I am just lucky.
Which makes me wonder--how many times a year do other bass clarinetists have to take their instruments in for repair, maintainance, etc?? (especially if you may use the above gig bag)

I never "take my instruments in" for repair or adjustments.

All silliness aside, I'm reluctant to use any sort of soft bag for any instrument larger than a Bb clarinet or soprano saxophone -- too much risk of damage.

Hank, I also think the Protec cases are good products. A friend has a double cases for his clarinets and it is as well built, as protective and as light as the more expensive Bam version. If Protec's bass case was long enough to hold my Buffet Prestige C, it would be "case closed" for this thread :>)

I just measure my Protec case and there is a maximum of 36 inches for the body. The case comes with a couple of padded blocks that can be placed in the end(s). for other lengths. I have mine set at 33 inches and am using the other block to control side motion. It took just a little while to figure things out but next time I have a gig on BC, I may glue them in although even loose, there are no problem.
BTW, I bought mine during the winter at shoebuy.com (of all places) when they had 20% off and free shipping so I think I have about $130 in the whole thing. The price was right.
There are some options for the shoulder straps (purchased separately) and I used a carry strap through one of the slots on the middle of the back. Then I hooked it to the handle of my Protec tenor Tri Pak.

Hank--mines longer than yours. I need a minimum of 40 inches with my upper & lowers connectied. I would prefer, however, that they could be stored separatly. Why Protec doesn't make a bass case to accomodate a low C model remains a mystery........Bam makes a good one, but it's still bulky and expensive in comparison to what Protec could market.
BTW, has "the jury" reached a final verdict regarding the Alterie bass clarinet gig bag??

Just a note on the Aliteri case cover I mentioned in an earlier post. I came in on Friday. Just out of the box the construction is amazing. They put alot of thought into these covers.

Bobby--the Altieri custom made case covers are simply the best. However, my question was about their new bass clarinet gig bag which is not a just a "cover" but a soft side case all by itself.

I carry my Contra in a gig bag - not Altieri (so much lighter!), but only when I know that I will always be in possession and control of the thing. No problems thus far.

when I called to order my case cover, I asked donna about the gig back and she was really confident in them. Hopefully someone who has ordered on will let you know more.
If not call and ask them more about them. they were really helpful on the case cover for me.
