 Basset Horn Knecks...
Author: KnightFranken

I have a Selmer Basset Horn which came with two identical knecks which are great for 440 tuning. I occasionally go to Europe with my clarinets & would like to be able to play in tune over there. In fact, I'll be going in August. Selmer in Indiana tell me that they have not dealt with them in years. Does anyone make me a custom shorter knecks?

If both crooks are identical in length, then you could always have one of them shortened.

The crook tenon can be heated up to melt the solder and then slid off the crook tube, then the exposed tubing can be shortened by around 2-3mm and then the tenon soldered back on again.

The plating (I'm assuming it's silver plated) shouldn't be too badly affected by this, if at all (and should polish up nicely afterwards). Then a new tenon cork can be fitted once that's all done.

Aah, so it's a "crookneck". Wasn't familiar with that abbrev.

Well if your playing here in the UK 440 is our pitch so no problems. Europe 441/2 Germany as high as 444. You should consider getting a barrel made for the basset horn, there's one on the instrument I have.
