I do like Byron's bass clarinet playing, but IMO he can't hold a candle to Bob Mintzer in that department.

From 1982: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcAV7Ri6gdY&feature=PlayList&p=D5DDE4506E540D50&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=14

Or this, so electronified it hardly sounds like a bass clarinet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77y04UHWT4s

Nobody even comes close to Eric Dolphy!

It's a nice interview, although a bit of a PR exercise - I like that he begins by saying he realises he has to improve his technique. Me and him too. But we seem to be going through our favourite Jazz bass clarinetists again? Maybe add - Louis Sclavis, Anthony Braxton, Michel Portal, Rudi Mahall. I suppose your right about Dolphy, though.

Look - not bass clarinet - but has nobody checked out Theo Jorgensmann on bassett clarinet? Fantastic - and playing in London next week (if anyone is interested in the gig details add 'Seb Rochford' to a search).

Although I hate jazz on the bass clarinet I have to admit that off them all Dolphy appeals the most to me as it's most clarinet like tone. Even Henri Bok sounds more saxaphone like at times.

There's an amazing album called "Blues Bag" with Buddy DeFranco on bass clarinet throughout.
