Did anyone watch the Boston Pops 4th of July concert on TV last night? I usually miss those because I'm playing my own with the Baltimore Symphony but because of the ball game on the same station I was able to catch it on a delayed broadcast. What a fantastic fire works display. Anyway, I noticed that the women playing second clarinet was playing a red, white and blue clarinet during the Stars and Strips Forever. Anyone know what she was playing on? Was it a combination of several cheap plastic clarinets or does she somehow "color" her clarinet? I could not hear her of course so intonation and tone were not apparent. I thought it was fun though for the 4th of July.
I guess you guys in England don't celebrate that holiday do you? Sorry about that but we're sure happy about it over here in the good old USA. ESP

I saw that too. Her name is Aline Benoit, Peter Hadcock's widow. I believe she is now married to Marshall Burlingame, prinicpal librarian of the BSO. She is a fine player and I can only imagine the instrument(s) she played on was up to her high standards. I will ask around to see how she came upon this patriotic combination.

Leblanc used to make plastic clarinets in pretty much any primary color. She must have mixed and matched the parts. I wish I had a set!

Ed, it was what used to be called the Leblanc "screamer". You need 3 clarinets to make the mix you saw. Besides in a that shot there was a "real" clarinet on the stand next to her. You know it really doesn't matter what clarinet you play when you play "Stars and Stripes" in the wrong key. Ed, it was nice to see you and Chris again. It's so weird to see people you studied with when you are older than they were when you studied with them. I remember once we figured out that Chris was 20 years older than Me, and Iggy was 20 years older than Chris. So I think Chris is gotta be getting close to 70, I'll admit I'll turn 50 next month.
John if they made the Bliss in purple sparkle I'd never play wood again!

It would appear to be a combination of joints from Vito Dazzler clarinets in three colors. Vito made what is, as far as I know, the only decent quality clarinet to come in an assortment of colors. I've got a white on in my collection, and it really plays quite nicely. I'm afraid that all the crappy Chinese-made colored clarinets on eBay have ruined the reputation of non-black clarinets forever, though. It's too bad, as my white Dazzler with its gold keys is a real standout for jazz solos. (For concert work, I revert to either my Buffet or my Selmer Mazzeo clarinet.)

I thought in a past year's broadcast I saw all the clarinet players switch to mix-and-match red-white-blue instruments. I assumed it was from jumbling the joints of three Dazzlers.

Yes Tom, Chris is pushing 70, he'll be 69 some time this year. Of course I'm not a day over 49, never will be either. It is interesting when we meet a former student that is now an adult, sometimes even looking older then us, not you of course. What I love is when I meet a former student that is now a successful doctor or lawyer. That's when I know I did a great job teaching them.
I assumed it was probably a mix and match clarinet and that she used a "better" clarinet in the other pieces at the Pops concert. It's all in fun and good taste. Got to get me one of those, would make an interesting lamp. Take care all, hope you had a good holiday. ESP

Based on my personal ownership of a Vito Dazzler (red) I'd say they were a decent clarinet and I'd expect an accomplished clarinet player to get a respectable performance from one.

The Bliss might be a strong candidate to get that color treatment, as would Lyrique. However, only the baseline Bliss with all composite would qualify given that one wouldn't want to dye the Grenadilla.
(although... don't touch the keywork finishing on the Bliss. This is one of a kind and deserves to be left as black.)
