That's me playing.
I've been playing for almost two years, I use a #5 Rue lepic reed, a francois louis ligature, a vandoren m15 mouthpiece, and a wooden yamaha 34 clarinet.
I'm planning on minoring in music in college... I'm not sure. Any tips on how to improve (based on my playing?)
I know it doesn't show much.
(off topic)I'm really having a hard time on rapid tonguing. I read in the art of clarinet playing(by david pino) that the tongue doesn't necessarily have to be on the tip of the reed, it just has to move slightly(it gives a very legato effect). Some clarinetists advise that 'tip on tongue' makes it way easier.
Thanks

Well my opinion and believe me there will be people here who disagree with me I think for only two years of study(and I don't know if you have a teacher) you both lack proper support and projection and this setup is way to hard for you I would at least lighten up the reed but I would also get more open mouthpiece with shorter facing.

"I'm really having a hard time on rapid tonguing."
You reed is way too hard. Use support from the abdomen, not the jaw.

I have spare 4.5s somewhere. It's just that I find my tone better using harder reeds. (I move half a step about 1-2 months). I only had my high school band teacher who professionally plays flute so yeah.
By support and projection do you mean more support from my abdomen as skygardener suggested, or my embouchure.
Thanks

You need to get more open mouthpiece more like since you are playing Vandoren the 5RV or 5RV Lyre because they are more open for a better projection and have shorter facing which is easier to control. And on this mouthpiece you are playing I would go down to #4 reed at least but I would rather change the mouthpiece.

You do a lot of things very well. I agree with the comments about support and projection, but it's hard to really evaluate your playing accurately because we didn't hear that much and the recording conditions might not have been the best.

I personally like the M15 very much. However, I really think your reed is too hard. You may be biting to keep this hard reed under control, and that's exactly what you shouldn't be doing. With proper breath support and a firm (but not biting embouchure), I think you could get a truly beautiful sound with a reed in the 3 - 3 1/2 - 4 range.

M15 might be a good mouthpiece I don't doubt it but I doubt it's the best choice for beginner who has just played for 2 years.

You came to the right place for opinions, that's "our" forte....or rather, double forte. Your setup sounds like something dreampt up by a clarinet afficianado. I agree that #5 reeds for a two year player are too stiff.....even for an M15mp. FL lig is "nice" but far too ostentatious for a beginner. Why worry about tongueing at this point......there are other factors that are more important.

Your best bet is to find a good experienced teacher. You should also read my website, I have several articles on tonguing and articulation, perhaps one of them will ring a bell and help you. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
