In the latest issue of Clarinet and Saxophone Society's magazine there is an interview by John Robert Brown with clarinet designer Morrie Backun. During the course of the article Morrie says of Ricky Morales;
"...he played the audition for the Chicago Orchestra and won. He's been asked to play for the New York Philharmonic." "They offered him the job of principal clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic."
Ricky really gets around!

I know he played with Berlin but I'm not sure they actually offered him the job. I don't think NY actually offered him the job either. He wasn't one of the finalist last year when NY didn't hire anyone, I don't think he even auditioned though I'm sure they invited him to, unlike Chicago where they actually offered him the job after he was the last man, or women, standing and he turned it down. David, I knew there weren't any women in the finals but I wasn't sure about the first round. As I know you know, there are some damn good female clarinet players these days, and some in major orchestras in the USA. ESP

Of course! That's very cool that she got that far - looks quite young too so a long career ahead for her.
I was surprised though that there weren't more females in the first audition. I figured there would be a couple at least!

There may have been talks between NY Phil and RM behind the scenes, but NY Phil clearly stated in their audition materials: "It is assumed that any applicant for this position will accept employment with the New York Philharmonic, if it is offered. If you do not intend to accept employment with the New York Philharmonic, please do not participate in this

I am pretty sure that these materials were made available after the results from the first Chicago audition went public, which RM won and turned down. However, I am not sure if this statement by NY Phil is standard on all their audition materials or if this line was added in the aftermath of the Chicago audition.

I believe that line was added after the Chicago for obvious reasons but I can't say for sure. I've never seen or heard that in any application before from any orchestra. But think about it, if the winner can't agree on a salary how can they force the winner to accept the job. That's like saying once someone is picked in the NFL draft the player has to sign with that club regardless of what they offer. It is interesting though. ESP

RM performed with the Berlin Phil,
but he was not asked to join the orchestra. There has to be a whole audition process for the Berlin Phil, and he plays the 'wrong' system.
There is no possibility that he was offer the job there. . .

As far as him getting a job offer from them is a different story.
Last high profile Boehm system player I remember playing with Berlin is Alessandro Carbonare. I think he may have been there for a year, but I am not sure.

Donald, the answer is no, he didn't tell me they offered him the job. I really don't think he was interested in moving to Germany, to far away he said. I believe it was just a great experience for him, and probably for them as well. ESP

Lied, no. I would say either he misunderstood what Ricardo Morales told him or he was miss quoted. I don't think Morrie would intentionally lie like that in print. To what purpose would that serve him? ESP
