 Howarth Clarinet Models?
Author: jparrette

Hi all -

Can somebody tell me how to tell a Howarth S2 from an S3? I have a set of clarinets that I know nothing about, except the Howarth logo!

Thanks in advance!

The best thing to do would be to contact Howarth with the serial numbers and ask them.
I have a pair of cocobolo Howarth S2 clarinets that I absolutely LOVE. The workmanship on these horns is fantastic, and I love the sound. Pity they're not more well-known in the States!

If they have just the logo only, they're most likely the S1 which is the forerunner of the S2 and has a 14.75mm bore. The S2 also has the same 14.75mm bore and the S3 which came in several years later has a narrower 14.65mm bore.

The S1 has a longer top joint upper tenon compared to Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer and Yamaha clarinets, but it wasn't stamped with anything apart from the Howarth logo. When the narrower bore S3 was introduced in the late '90s, the S2 was stamped with S2 in the logo (which wasn't inside an oval) so you could tell which model was which. Both the S2 and S3 have a 'normal' length top joint upper tenon.

The bells on later Howarth clarinets don't have a metal bell ring, but do have metal tipped tenons and an adjusting screw on the LH F/C key foot.

I have a student who bought a Howarth Bb a few years ago (I don't know which model). It is a very nice instrument.

Howarth also had a student model clarinet on the market which was made by Marigaux, with either nickel or silver plated keys.
