A very interesting video showing the clarinetists of the Orchestre de Paris working out passages in Midsummer Night's Dream and the Tan Dun Eroica Symphony.
Also, listen to the technical passage at 7'49''

I found that fascinating, even though I could only understand about every fifth word.

Is the Scherzo from Midsummers night dream usually played that fast ? I've heard very few versions of it so I would like to know how fast you think you should be able to play for example for audition. I've heard Larry Combs play it on his Orchestral Excerpts cd and it was much slower than this. Is that something near the norm ?

These guys are impressive in their speed (north of the 92 that Szell insisted Marcellus play it at) but who plays it this fast in real life?
In real life most conductors do the Scherzo between 80- - 88.
As for the other stuff, who cares?
Anyone, including my students, can play notes up and down the clarinet. That by itself doesnt make music.

I agree with you David, I don't see how it could be single tongued that fast. (Of course, I myself have trouble with it at 80, so perhaps there is a much larger spectrum of single tonguing ability than I am aware of.)

Every once in a while YouTube redeems itself. Two wonderful musicians, collaborating on their art.

I was sort of surprised that some thought they took it too fast.....My memory says I've heard it this fast more often than slower. I noticed the barrels on the horns they were playing didn't have rings but the one on its stand did.

Whether it is single or double, one has to be ready to play it at any time at tempos approaching 100...with all of the accents and dynamics (hard to discern on the YouTube recording).
In the CSO we did it as an encore to the Mahler 5th at Orchestra Hall, Chicago w/Solti and many times on tour during the 80's. After all that blowing one's brains out in the Mahler, it was quite a challenge to play lightly and softly at Solti's 92 - 96.
Later, Barenboim used it as one of many encores on tour and I remember in particular a tour where he wanted to show off his new principal flutist and pushed the tempo PAST 100! Needless to say, we filled in with a few judicious slurs. Some of these concerts were broadcast live for the Proms by the BBC. They did their usual stunning job of camera work and miking from Royal Albert Hall.
On the Levine recording of the complete incidental music with singers for DG ay Orchestra Hall Chicago, we started with takes at around 100 and it eventually slowed a bit, settling in to an average resembling the Szell recording - around 92. An absolutely beautiful recorded performance if one can still find it! Recorded summer 1983.

Does this mean that if I buy one I can sound just like them?

It does, though it can be bad music. But in this YouTube clip it's very good.

They play really well in tune with each other, too. In unison passages they sound like one clarinet. Not to mention their insanely good technique. Merveilleux!

Funny that they took all the golden rings of the rings and the golden badges away - except the golden ring on the bell.

The coolest thing about this video is how much of clarinet section they are as opposed to 2 individual players. They discuss articulation and phrasing together, work on intonation based on context, and perfectly blend or discord sound based on the music.
Yes, the technique is amazing, but what is exciting is seeing what one talks about and tries to fine tune, once technique is mastered. It is very humbling...
Perhaps more importantly they look like they are loving every minute of it.

And of course, for the Buffet mafia, they are not playing Buffet and they are in Paris.
A tiny rest for the Selmer uh, mafiło.

I agree Graham. But of course there are two clarinetists, therefore, 2 tongues.
The French School has always stressed precise tongueing technique.

In the last part, most of the time they were but they were also a bit not together. This is a really fast passage, amazing how much together they could play!

A question was raised about the accoustics. They are playing on the stage of the Salle Pleyel in Paris.

I just listened to this vid for the second time, hoping I could find *something* to comment about--translation, criticize--and found absolutely nothing, nada, zilch, etc. Their artistry makes me wonder why I keep trying to play my clarinets, or wonder why I ever did in the first place. Wheither they are double tonguing or singling, the resulting performance is just about as good as can be--crisp, together and musical. And they make it look and sound, easy & fun. Thanks, GBK, for posting this video--but please, no more--my ego just won't survive intact.
But wait........, I got over "Dragon's Tongue" and the RS Utube warmup--I can get over this as well. Where's that "Stranger on the Shore" vid......?

I think a few of the tracks from that recording are on iTunes, apparently re-released on other albums. I downloaded one from iTunes several months ago of the Scherzo from an album put out by the HGTV network called "Morning Coffee." It's the CSO with James Levine, so I assume it's the same recording.
