I have a very good playing Penzel Mueller bass clarinet mouthpiece. Recently I inadvertently played it while it wasn't fully inserted into the neck socket. There was a 1-2 mm gap. Unless I'm imagining it there is a noticable increase in resonance of the tone. Has anyone else experienced this with their bass or soprano clarinet?

Pulling either mouthpiece or barrel has never made any difference to any of my clarinets other than tuning. The basic tone quality has never been changed.

I think the effect was illusory. Or the reed was performing exceptionally well that day. Or it was the peak of a sunspot cycle, or the magnetic North Pole had shifted position slightly, or the stars had achieved harmonic convergence.
On the other hand, since I've never experienced anything remotely resembling resonance in my own playing, I'm not qualified to comment.
Nor am I ever sarcastic. Never.

I would think it would have the same effect as pulling out a clarinet barrel for tuning purposes. I seriously don't think it would make any tonal difference though it may play the throat tones flatter if they were already in tune. Having never experienced it though I can't say for sure, but doubtful. ESP

Maybe the beak was somewhat loose (not shoved in properly) so it developed a dynamic of its own...

I have some older clarinets that have a gap of about 3+ mm between the bottom of the barrel and the top joint. This is really quite big and I sometimes wonder if it was designed like this on purpose.
