A few days ago, I was thinking about the Polka and Fugue from Jaromir Weinberger's "Schwanda the Bagpiper." I've played the popular band transcription of it and I've heard it many times, and I began to wonder if Weinberger wrote anything else. I did a Wikipedia search, and learned that he wrote quite a bit of music. For some reason, though, aside from the Polka and Fugue, his music is seldom performed today.
Looking at the list of his compositions, I was surprised to learn that he wrote a clarinet sonatina, and I discovered that it is in print. Has anyone ever played it or heard it performed, and if so, what can you say about it?
I noticed that he also wrote a saxophone concerto. There aren't a lot of saxophone concertos (certainly not many that are well-known). I've never heard of this one. Has anyone ever heard it or played it?

The Weinberger Sonatina was my first recital piece about age 11! It's quite simple to play. I may have my copy around somewhere if you want it. Let me know and I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for your reply. If I'm looking for a solo for a middle school student to play at a solo-ensemble festival, do you think this might be a good choice?

I would say yes unless the student is a beginner in which case it would be too hard or has an advanced technique in which case it might be too easy. As I said I played it when I was about 11 or 12 and that was after playing clarinet 2-3 years. I've been looking for it but haven't found it yet so not sure if I have it anymore. Will keep looking if you're still interested.
