 Donald Montanaro Teaching Philosophies
Author: clarinetwoman

In a recent clarinet magazine, some of Mr. Montanaro's teaching philosophies were introduce by some of his former students:

Sound shoud be like a diamond wrapped in velvet
Importance of starting a note correctly
half tone chromatic scale interval excercise
importance of articulation
Dynamic drill: 123454321 then 151 in regards to dynamic intensity
starting a note without accents in the "middle of the note"

if any of you have anymore teaching philosophies from Mr. Montanaro that you learned via masterclass or personally would you please post? this is simply to pass his legacy on.................................

Starting a note correctly meaning not to either creep in nor to accent the note.

He also stresses not to spread the sound.

What does this mean, exactly? Don't accents (wanted or unwanted) usually appear at the beginnings of notes?

I call that the "racecar driveby" effect. It's when a player swells the tone after starting it.

David- are you referring to the 'messa di voce'?

Nope, much quicker than that.

The driveby (dopler effect almost) would be in a short period of time. Messa would be a musical technique, whereas the driveby is just lack of control.

Hello clarinetwoman,

I see you are in the Dallas area. So am I! As a former student of Mr. Montanaro and contributor to that article you mentioned, I'd be happy to share more detailed information if you would like to contact me off of the board. Best wishes!

Greg Raden
