The Most Important Pieces and Excerpts
Author: moltar49

I was wondering what you guys felt are the most important (take that to mean whatever you would like) pieces and orchestral excerpts for clarinet.
I will set an arbitrary limit on what you can list to only 7 pieces/excerpts.

May or may not be the most important - but clearly the most common is the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream. Live the metronome. Be the metronome!

http://mytempo.com/orchestra.htm the list in the center of the page. Much more than 7, but it's got almost all of the "big ones" listed

Dunno if I'd call any excerpts "important."

"Most likely to show up on an audition", perhaps, but not important.

I think all the suggestions are good but trying to pick only seven is impossible. When I used to do auditions they didn't send out lists, yes that was a long time ago. We just learned everything. If it's played, you should know it because when the list says "sight reading" it means anything possible not on the list that is considered "standard" repertoire. So it's true that there are some almost always asked but if you make the finals and you are actually sight reading something that the others know, you loose. By the way, I've posted a list of bass clarinet excerpts you should know when taking a bass clarinet audition. It's on my web page under the bass clarinet page and was originally printed in the Clarinet journal many years ago, though I did edit it somewhat. There's also a fingering chart and some other articles on that page. ESP
