Your opinions on this arrangement of "Claire de Lune"

I rather like the arrangement, but thought it was played a little too forte for my taste for what should be a more delicate piece. I also thought a little more on the lower end with the bass might have evened it out a bit.

I am in love with Debussy's music. The atmosphere is so cool in his compositions.

Can't say I particularly care for it. The harmonies sound really funky on just clarinets, to the point that a lot of it sounds way out of place. Dunno if the arranger took liberties on some of that, or if it just came across that way.

It just sounds WAY too busy.

I agree with it being too busy, maybe the upper register was too crowded. I wanted to hear more of the Bass in there.

I just think it is too beautiful a song to be making clarinets sound like trumpets. I must come from the "clarinets should never play fortissimo" school.

I come from the school of "clarinets should never play fortissimo before they can play piano properly."

Debussy is particularly poorly suited to arrange for clarinet ensemble, imho.

"Debussy is particularly poorly suited to arrange for clarinet ensemble"

Not always -- listen to the Budapest Clarinet Quintet on Naxos CD "Clarinet Evergreens."

I have a recording of this piece arranged for clarinet sextet, performed by a group called "The Clarinet Section." The name of the album is "Le Jardin Feerique." It's on iTunes.

I think the clarinet sextet arrangement is actually pretty effective. My only real complaint about the recording is that the Eb player tends to go out of tune and stick out a bit in a few key spots--better Eb playing would have solved that problem, so I can't really fault the arranger so much. Their recording of "Arabesque No. 1" (also by Debussy), which is on the same album, is much better and seems quite natural for a clarinet ensemble.

I think much of Debussy's piano music is actually very well suited for clarinet ensemble if played well. The main problem is that it's sometimes difficult to execute well because it requires a light touch and a sensitive ear.

The main problem with this YouTube recording, as I see it, is that the playing is too heavy. Part of this is a side effect of the way it is arranged, but I think most of it has to do with how it's being played.
