 Buffet Bass Clarinet serial number
Author: fargus

Hi all

I've just purchased a Buffet bass clarinet to low c. I haven't got it yet but from all the photos I've seen it looks like there's no serial number.

Is this possible? Any explanation?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Buffet stamps its serial numbers on the back of the upper and lower joints just above the bottom tenon.

When the instrument arrives, if there are no serial numbers in the expected places, check whether they have been filed off. If they have, I'd suspect that the instrument has been stolen, particularly if you got it for an unreasonably low price.

Thanks Ken

I'll check that when it arrives.

I bought it from a dealer who seems to specialize in all types of used horns so I doubt if it's of dubious origin. Also, it wasn't too cheap!

Thanks
Fergus

I may be wrong, but if I'm correctly guessing which BC you purchased I can just make out the beginning of a serial on one of the high-resolution photos of the end of the lower joint.

Scrub the serial number area with an old, dampened toothbrush. That will get the crud out of the stamping and make it easier to read.

Lots of instruments bought from pawn shops have the serial numbers oblitterated for many reasons (the most obvious being they're stolen), but you bought it in good faith so don't let it play on your conscience.

Has the instrument had a tenon graft or socket graft? If so, the area where the serial numbers are usually stamped are cut out to replace either the socket (upper joint) or the tenon (lower joint).
