hello everyone/anyone,
I am "desperately" looking for an original piece of music that has been out of print for many years. For my daughter's state competition, a photo copy (not even a copy from the public domain) is acceptable. State competition is March 28. Can anyone help?

That seems rather ridiculous, as that piece is clearly in the public domain and perfectly legal to copy. You can download a copy of it here:

What state are you in? Perhaps you should contact the people running the contest and ask them to give you an "official ruling" on this matter. I would think they would be cooperative in this sort of situation--if the piece is public domain and out of print, there is no reason for enforcing the no photocopying rule in this case.
Some other options are:
Borrow the piece through Inter-library Loan (ILL) at your local public library. (Use the download copy above to practice, and then use the ILL copy at the contest.)
Contact the publisher (Carl Fischer) and see if they can help you either track down an "original" copy or at least document the fact that the piece is out of print and that any copy you have you obtained with the publisher's blessing. Some publishers (more specifically, their music librarians) will even make a you a photocopy and send it to you if the piece is public domain and otherwise unavailable to you.

The ICA has it. Go to http://www.lib.umd.edu/PAL/SCPA/T.html and then search for Thornton. If you're a member, you can borrow it.
The copyright date on the PDF mrn lined to is 1881, so it's obviously in the public domain. Print out the first page and show it to the idiots at the state competition.

While they're at it, they should start looking for the future for a new piece that's more easily available.
