Buffet R13 Vintage problem with barrels...
Author: Marcuin

Hi,
I'm playing R13 Vintage (2004). I want to buy new barrel. I'm specially interested in Moening and Chadash barrels. I tryied both but...I can't piece that with my clarinet! I think that R13 Vintage has different bore. Am I right? Are there any different Moening or Chadash barrels designed specially for Vintage I have?
Sorry for my english...but I hope you understand what I mean.
Greetings,
Marcuin

Marcuin,

I have no trouble understanding your English. I have used both Moennig and Chadash barrells on my R-13 Vintage. They fit and play just fine.

My Vintage R13-A clarinet came with 2 barrels, one being a reverse taper which was labelled "V2," so that means that the Vintage does indeed use a different bore even in the "stock" reverse taper one.
Did yours not come with 2 barrels?
It measures slightly different from a Moennig A clarinet taper.
Perhaps you are perceiving that difference.

Unless you are describing a problem with the socket dimensions (the tenon not fitting properly).
Please expand on what you mean by "fit."

Disclaimer...I make and sell barrels, including ones for Vintage models.

I play a true vintge R13 (1963 made) and FWIW, I do not like the Moennig barrel with my clarinet. The main problem I find with the Moennig is that it is only one part of the total clarinet overhaul done that also involved tone hole changes along with bell and bore modifications. It wasn't just all the barrel, and for me, anyhow, just the barrel does not work.

The Chadash barrels are designed to be extentions of the existing clarinet bore and work all by themselves without other accoustical modifications, other than a more compatable mouthpiece which Gregory Smith offers with his fine products. I like the Chadash barrels, but have chosen to play one of the original stock R13 barrels that I already have, maybe because I am just more used to it and resistant to change. Although I did resort with successful results to another "golden oldie" during a trio (ob, bsn, clar) trio rehearsal last week, my 6-7-67 Springer barrel which I played in college. Might be something to that old theory about the old dog learning new tricks--lol.

Again, as with all new equipement--mouthpiece, barrel, bell, ligature, etc--you have to try many examples of each product to find the one that works best for you. Just because the same guy makes it doesn't mean they all will play the same. Always, try before you buy, if you can........

Also, although I do not know the specific accoustical measurements, you are correct in observing that the "vintage" bore is different than those of the more recent Buffet models. That was the whole "point" of their reintroduction of the vintage R13 clarinet--because so many players seem to prefer it--or so they think--to the newer Prestige & others. In any case, I've tried the new Prestige Bb and much prefer my much older R13's tone quality and flexability--but then, again, maybe that's just the "old dog" in me. Good luck.....and I too think your english is just fine.

I overhauled a R13 vintage and it had 2 barrels. One normal and one reverse taper (same as Allan above mentioned).

I own 1955 R13s and I wish I tried the Vintage barrels with my R13 but didn't.

Myself and the owner preferred the regular bore barrel with the Vintage.

Thank's for your posts.
I have 2 barrels(both 66mm) with my Vintage (V and V2). The "V" barrel has quite smaller bore and it's hard to piece it or fish it out. It has very bright sound and is very hight in tune.
Second, the "V2" barrel is just fine and works good for me, but it's to hight too(a=444). Thats why I wont to buy new barrel. I think what 67mm barrel will be great.
I can't fit it beacause it's to tight-like Chadash and Moening. But why? :/
I thought what those barrels are universal...

First, I also prefer the V2 barrel sound on the instrument.

Next, it seems that replacement barrels will not fit your tenons.
A tech. could fix this for you or at least measure one of yours that fits. then ream the socket of a replacement 67mm barrel.

Alternatively, add some tuning rings to your present set up.

My previously stated disclaimer applies...I make and sell custom barrels

I use the V2 barrel with my R-13 Vintage,, slighty pulled out with a couple of tuning rings. It tunes to quite an even 440 over the whole range.

A slightly longer barrel would probably work, but after a long warm up sometimes I push in a bit.

From Marcuin's follow-up post, it seems clear that the "bore" issue has to do with fitting the tenon into the socket. I've had that issue on the "V" barrel on my Vintage, about the same age as Marcuin's. The "V2," which I prefer, is fine. I also had fit problems on my R13 Eb with both the original and a Chadash barrel. At the risk of scorn from the professional technician community, it's no big problem to sand the inside of the socket. A dial caliper is helpful to make sure the socket is round. A real tech might turn down the tenon instead. I wouldn't try *that* at home. If you have a nearby technician that you trust, take the instrument in, by all means. Otherwise, the home remedy has worked for me. What's the worst thing that can happen from sanding out the socket on a barrel?
