We are looking at playing the Mozart k 626 Requiem. Does anyone know where we can rent Basset horns for that performance.

I've never heard of a store renting basset horns, but hopefully life is better where you live. I would contact the nearest university and start asking questions...I know of a program in VA that has three basset horns.

We are scheduled in the Summer at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of music. I do have some connections but as yet no hope or bites for someone coming up with the instruments.

Thanks for replying.

See if your university could contact any other universities or music schools that could help out by lending a pair of bassets.

I'm sure most universities will be willing to cooperate with each other in most ways, and maybe they can help out with this request.

I believe that Weiner Music in NY rents instruments. <Weinermusic.com>

Mr. Clarinet,

Try to get the horn early as basset horn is a way different beast than the Bb if you've not used it before. It sort of has to be "coaxed" compared to a Bb or bass. If you rent a LeBlanc the Hite or Grabner alto mouthpiece works great with a Java saxophone reed #3.

Lisa's Clarinet shop had a recent announcement that they had a new Buffet basset horn in stock. That might be a possibility. I bought my LeBlanc from Weiner's although it had to be ordered so I don't know if they maintain one in stock or not.

Good luck on the Mozart. It is a beautifuol piece.

If the basset is in good repair, it shouldn't need too much coaxing. I tried one at C-fest '07 that was a delight, no coaxing required. Unfortunately, like many auxiliary clarinets, they tend to be neglected as far as repairs go, and as a result people will often think that the instrument by its very nature, rather than due to its poor condition, is simply much harder to play.

If you want a basset horn and a basset horn player I live a couple of hours drive away from the U of I. Sorry but I don't rent out or loan my instruments. My schedule is pretty open for the summer and I work for free.

I'm pretty sure the Tucson Symphony rented a pair of basset horns a year or two ago. I don't know the source, but there are a number of contacts on the orchestra's web site http://tucsonsymphony.org . Perhaps someone there could help. Click on TSO Administrative Staff in the "About the TSO" menu.

Similar to what Bill said a couple of replies up, if you want a basset horn and the player, I'll volunteer myself - although it's a bit of a trek for me as I'll need to fly out from Gatwick (if flights go directly from Gatwick to as near as Idaho as possible) and book accommodation out in Idaho. I reckon my basset horn will be able to go in as hand luggage, though the floor spike will have to go in my main luggage in the hold.

Alex,

Maybe the word "coax" is unfortunate. My horn is in fine shape but the embouchure and resistance of the horn are a good bit different than a clarinet; you might get notes but not a pretty sound. Even in the narrow bore bassets that use a clarinet mouthpiece, you wouldn't use the same mouthpiece or reed to get the optimum sound on a basset. If you have only played Bb and only accustomed to that set up, I think it takes a bit to feel the differences not to mention the basset notes which a Bb doesn't even have.

Hey Peter

Is that fight you refer to the one with the US Customs officials.

Also, from whom do you intend to borrow a basset to do the gig?

But which basset horn is better - Buffet or Selmer?

There's only one way to find out...

FIGHT!

Hi Graham,

I'd happily go with the US Customs as long as the return trip was paid for. I have my sources with regard to a fine Selmer basset horn.

BTW if the fee is cash all the better

I would also be willing to fly out to play on my own horn. I am in Baltimore, MD.
